How To Create an Eclectic, Renter-Friendly Interior
HOW TO CREATE AN ECLECTIC, RENTER-FRIENDLY INTERIOR
Eclectic design is whatever you want it to be. That’s the beauty of this style.
I personally resonate with this design because I love both vintage and modern elements. Vintage pieces reflect my depth, while modern pieces reflect my efforts to stay present in the moment. I love mixing the two within my home. Together they make it feel more personal.
More personal elements make for a more homey feel.
START WITH YOUR MUST HAVES
When designing a space, your must have items should always be considered first in order to properly mesh them with new pieces. This is especially important with eclectic design.
FURNITURE
Think basics. Sofa, coffee table, bed, night stands, dresser, etc. How do you plan to lay them out in the space?
ART
What pieces do you have that you’ll keep on display? What will you add to your collection?
Art is a big part of eclectic design, especially when paired with art from different eras. The contrast created between them gives a settle nod to eclecticism.
FIND INSPIRATION
With any design process, I like to start broad and simple, then slowly work my way to the finer details. Begin with the three subcategories below.
COLOR
What colors do you love? What colors make you feel good?
MATERIALS
Same idea applies to materials. What are you drawn to? What kind of textures you feel good? Even in a rental, there are many products to help create your dream space that won’t sacrifice your deposit! Peel & stick wallpaper is a great substitute for paint. It’s less time to install and less messy! Peel & stick tile works well too.
DESIGN STYLES
Eclectic design is all about meshing different styles that work cohesively in one space. Don’t be afraid to look outside the box.
Pull images of spaces you’re drawn to. No matter how different they compare to one another, having a variety will spark more ideas down the road. You may be drawn to certain elements in one image and different ones in another.
GATHER YOUR VISION
You’ve established your must-haves, colors, materials and design styles. Put them together to see how they work side by side.
If you’re designing multiple rooms, begin to think how your vision can be applied to each space.
LAYER, LAYER, LAYER
This step is KEY.
And the fun part! Pull and play with the elements from your vision. More color? Less texture? You’ll begin to find your balance as you see the elements come together.
SEE THE REALITY
Now it’s time to make it a reality by bringing your vision to life!
