How To Style a Mantel: My Go-To Decor All Year

Mantel decor holds a special place in my heart. The mantel is one of my favorite places to style in a home. Something about a fireplace takes a space from 0 to cozy real quick, which I. Am. Here. For. I love keeping mantel decor simple for convenience’s sake, but contrastingly using unique pieces to tap into personality.

Discover how to make your own statement with my year-round, go-to mantel decor.

Starting from the biggest to the smallest, layer these items one by one to bring the best focal outcome.

Art

When it comes to mantel decor, I’d recommend starting with art. This is especially important if it is at a larger scale. If so, this will become the anchor piece of the mantel, placed in the center. In addition, it’s often easier to pick and place it first and coordinate the other objects around it after because of it’s uniqueness. This is a great piece if you’re looking to add more personality to your mantel. It doesn’t have to be expensive either. It all depends on what speaks to you.

Mirrors

These can act as the anchor of all the mantel as well if it is the largest piece you will incorporate. Mirrors add great depth to a room because of their reflection. The bigger it is, the more depth it will create. I love selecting ornate mirrors because of their simple charm. It adds a little decoration, but not too much.

Vases

Vases add another layer. Depending on their height, you can get creative with where they sit. Adding flowers or branches will soften their look, however leaving them be can be just as beautiful. I like vases because they connect the heights of the taller pieces to the smaller ones. They also add depth with their texture, depending on the vase.

Books

Instead of filling my mantel with other random decor objects, I like to add books. Books are another flexible item to incorporate when achieving a layered look. I don’t know what it is, but I feel they bring such warmth and quaintness to a space. Like the vase, they act more as a supporting decor piece to help highlight the others.

Candles

Who doesn’t love a good-scented candle? They match every season and add ambiance to the space. Not only will they be a layer on your mantle, but they will also be an additional layer of light. Especially in the evening, eye-level lighting is much easier on the eyes and oh-so-pretty to look at.
